What goes into a shoot?
Managing cost expectations.
There's no such thing as a quick shoot.
Every event has it's own unique hurdles during and post.
You may want to hire a photographer for only an hour of your time and wonder why the estimate is so high. However you're paying a photographer for the hours of time spent on your specific project.
Five hundred dollars for an hour is a significant amount of money. However, once the event is delivered that one hour may be 8-15hours. Bringing the per hour rate from $500 to $62-34 per hour.

Many photographers arrive with a flash + camera for a period of time and that's all you see. What happens after the event is far more difficult than the hours spent recording the event.
So, what really goes into a wedding or event shoot? There are the cameras, on camera flash, off camera flash + modifier, digital setup, video equipment, backup equipment, equipment management, travel + transport, setup/ breakdown, download time, raw file editing time, processing time, upload and curation, emails with the client throughout.
